FILM-MAKER, FILM CRITIC AND BEYOND…
Megan Spencer is one of Australia’s most dedicated documentary makers and well-respected national film critics.
For two decades she has been involved in all aspects of media culture and production: film, radio, TV, print & online. Film is Megan’s passion and she is in the rare position of being both critic and practitioner. Since 1998 she has been the resident film critic at national ABC radio network triple j; from 2004-2006 she was a presenter/reporter/film reviewer for SBS’s long-running film review television program The Movie Show; in 2006 she was a judge on the second series of Movie Extra’s Project Greenlight Australia, and in July 2007 was appointed the Guest Artistic Director for the 10th Perth Revelation International Film Festival.
Megan is also a regular guest on ABC radio programs such as Drive with Richard Glover ABC 702, Radio National’s Movietime and also appeared on Nine Network TV series, What A Year in 2006.
Since the early 90s Megan has worked extensively as an independent filmmaker. Her major productions are: Heathens (1996), Hooked On Christmas (1997), Strange Hungers: Mistress Ursula (2002), and her latest documentary Lovestruck: Wrestling’s No. 1 Fan (2006) has just been released onto DVD after completeing a critically acclaimed cinema release in April-May of this year. In 2001 Megan was appointed juror on the inaugural FIPRESCI jury of international film critics at Melbourne International Film Festival. She has judged countless local film festivals, and has covered the prestigious Berlinale and Toronto International Film Festival for both radio and television. A seasoned public speaker, Megan has also taught film for over ten years at various educational institutions including Macquarie, Melbourne and RMIT Universities, AFTRS (Melb), VCA, and both Sydney and Sydney International Film Schools. In 2004 she completed a Masters Of Media Arts (Documentary) at RMIT University.
Megan has an extensive background as a film curator and programmer, and her enthusiasm for GOOD FILM is catching! She is delighted to be working with CarriageWorks to bring Destination Film Festival to life.
